Two 17-year-old burglary suspects were arrested Monday night, police said, just 100 yards away from the house they're accused of burglarizing. The youths, who weren't identified because of their age, were arrested after a homeowner on Helms Hill Road caught them in the act about 7 p.m. Monday, said Blooming Grove Police Chief Carl Schupp. The teens bailed out through a window, but one of them left a bag containing his haul, Schupp said. State troopers and police from Blooming Grove and New Windsor, including a K-9 handler, tracked the thieves through the woods, and the tracks led to a home near the one that had been burglarized, Schupp said. The 17-year-old resident and his friend were arrested. Both were charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and third-degree grand larceny, felonies. The stolen property, most of it jewelry, was recovered. Both teens were sent to Orange County Jail in lieu of $500 bail, pending further court action. – OLIVER MACKSO |
