A
second suspect in the drag-racing accident that killed a 17-year-old has
been charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and illegal speed
contests, Dave Huey, the Orange County executive assistant district
attorney,
said yesterday. Since both suspects in the case are teens and have been
given youthful offender status, Huey refused to release their names.
However, according to earlier reports, the second suspect is 18-year-old
Douglas Carter of Chester. Carter, now a college student, was
arraigned on the misdemeanor charges in Town of Blooming Grove Court two
weeks ago and released on an appearance ticket. A late-night race in April
between Carter and another driver ended in the crash that killed
Christopher Byrnes. Byrnes was a passenger in the second car. The driver
of the other car, Paul Weinberger, 18, was charged with the same
misdemeanors in early December, after a county grand jury found enough
evidence to prove that the teens were drag racing.
If found guilty, both teens could face up to six months in jail. A
hearing is set for Feb. 5 in Town of Blooming Grove Court.
