Blooming Grove man thankful for second chance at life

Blooming Grove – In April, Kathie Swanson's husband,
Todd, suffered a heart attack at their Blooming Grove home.
Todd was clinically dead for about eight minutes, but he
was saved by the three police officers who responded with
a defibrillator that brought him back to life.
"I am thankful for my honey," Kathie says.
Todd was in a coma for 10 days, while his wife and three
kids – ages 6, 7 and 15 – prayed he would pull through.
"His heart stopped, he was dead, and it was the defibrillator
that brought him back," Kathie said. Kathie still cries. But she is
also thankful for the family and friends that stood by her side,
and also those who donated enough money for an additional defibrillator
for the Blooming Grove Police Department.
And she is thankful for the three police officers
who came to Todd's rescue, and for the nurses at Arden Hill Hospital
when her husband was in the coma – "especially Zoe, who Todd
responded to the most," she said.
Now, Todd has his own defibrillator implanted in his chest
and he is under constant watch. The couple still talk about
that near-death experience almost every day.
But most importantly, Kathie said, they have stopped taking life for granted
– and for that, they will always be thankful.
